Letter: Iditarod volunteers are great people

Thank you so much for the incredible honor of being featured on the cover of your insert for Iditarod 41.

As one of thousands of volunteers, and without you even knowing, a Canadian Forces member newly posted here to JBER, you have represented the spirit of volunteerism and our unique partnership.

I reflect back on the past few weeks with pride and have been thoroughly impressed by the consummate professionalism of the ladies and gentlemen behind the scenes of The Last Great Race. They genuinely care for the tradition, but most importantly for the athletes — the dogs. I worked volunteer registration, race statistics, hotel sales, but the best of all was being with the dogs as a handler (for Matt Giblin at start and for Michelle Phillips at restart) and a dropped dog helper.

I met new friends from around the world, all with a true passion for this race. Attending the Iditarod had been on my “bucket list” and being involved as a volunteer was over the top. Can’t wait for next year!
