Joule joins board of Institute of the North

Anchorage, Alaska—The Institute of the North welcomes Northwest Arctic Borough Mayor Reggie Joule to the Board of Directors.

"Mayor Joule brings a wealth of Arctic experience and perspective to the Institute of the North's board," said Executive Director Nils Andreassen. "Reggie has been a long-time friend of the Institute and is a distinguished Alaska leader—we welcome this opportunity to add his voice to the great work we're doing," added Drue Pearce, board chair.

Mayor Reggie Joule was elected to serve as Northwest Arctic Borough Mayor in 2012. Immediately prior, Joule served eight terms in the Alaska State House of Representatives. While in the Alaska legislature, he chaired the Northern Waters Task Force, which led to the creation of the Arctic Policy Commission. He also served on the Alaska Climate Impact Assessment Commission, the Education Funding District Cost Factor Commission and the Fiscal Policy Finance Subcommittee. Joule has lived in Kotzebue since 1958. He worked at a variety of jobs and was employed by various agencies including the Kotzebue City Council, NANA, the Northwest Arctic School Board, Alaska Technical Center, Kotzebue IRA and Tikigaq Corporation.

Mayor Joule joins current directors – Drue Pearce (chair), Duane Heyman (vice chair), Randy Hagenstein (secretary), Peter Scott (treasurer), Ira Perman (at-large), Admiral Thomas Barrett, Matt Ganley, Dr. Jack Hickel, Brad Keithley, Karen Matthias, Dr. Michael Sfraga, Brit Szymoniak (Lead:North liaison), and LCDR Richard Walsh (US DOD liaison).
