Spenard Jazz Fest begins June 7

With the promise of summer creeping over the mountains earlier every day, it's nearly time to start thinking about things to do when it finally arrives. The annual Spenard Jazz Fest starts June 7, consisting of three installments. Events occur on the weekends of June 7-9, June 13-16 and June 21-23, with Organic Oasis, Spenard Farmers Market, Delaney Park Stip, Maxine's Fireweek Bistro and Hugi-Lewis Studio holding most of the events.

Most of the festival is in Spenard, with events like Jazz on the Roof, Jazz Hackers and the new Alaska Song of the Year competition (which is still taking submitions). But a few events aren't in Spenard, including the Alaska premiere of John Luther Adam's work "Inuksuit," which will be at the Alaska Native Heritage Center on June 21. The piece debuted in Banff, Alberta, in 2009 and includes nearly 100 musicians performing outdoors.

The website for the Spenard Jazz Fest has yet to be updated for this year's event, but tickets will be available at spenardjazzfest.org on May 1.
