Walmart manager wounded in shooting still in critical condition, hospital says

A Walmart assistant manager remained in critical condition at an Anchorage hospital Friday, nearly a week after he was shot inside the Midtown store where he worked.

Police said 45-year-old Daniel Pirtle shot the assistant manager, 33-year-old Jason Mahi in the abdomen near the Walmart's sporting goods section March 16.

Pirtle, a double amputee, was driving a motorized shopping cart inside the store and had an unrestrained dog with him, police said. Employees asked him to put the dog on a leash, and when Pirtle refused, they asked him to leave, police said. As the employees were escorting Pirtle out, he shot Mahi once, police said. An off-duty police sergeant stopped Pirtle near the store's front door, and officers arrested him. Medics rushed Mahi to Providence Alaska Medical Center.

A Providence spokeswoman said Mahi was in critical condition all week and remained so Friday. His family has declined to comment, the hospital spokeswoman said.

Pirtle is charged with weapons misconduct and assault.
