Sign up early for this year's Heart Run

Being fast could bring special benefits for runners entering next month's Alaska Heart Run.

Everyone who signs up for the state's biggest 5-kilometer race by April 20 will be entered in a drawing for two Alaska Airline tickets, race organizers said last week.

The race, a fundraiser put on by the American Heart Association, is April 27.

The April 20 date is an important one to remember. Besides being the cutoff for the drawing, it's the last day runners can enter the timed event.

That varies from previous years, when people could enter the timed event closer to race day.

Those entering the untimed event have until April 26, but they'll save $10 if they enter by April 20.

Francesca Minas of the American Heart Association said the early cutoff for the timed event was necessary because the Heart Run will use a new timing system this year.

"We will need adequate time to transfer our data to theirs, as well as time to test out the system and make sure everything will work properly," Minas explained in an email.

Runners will immediately notice one difference with the new timing system -- instead of timing chips, it uses stickers placed on race bibs.

Registration fees start at $5 for kids and $20 for adults. Here are the key dates for registration and bib pickup:

Saturday, April 20 -- Bib pickup, plus the final day for in-person, online and mail registration for timed event, noon-3 p.m., King Career Center.

Tuesday, April 23 -- Bib pickup and in-person entry for non-timed event, 4:30-6:30 p.m., King Career Center.

Thursday, April 25 -- Online entries close for non-timed event.

Friday, April 26 -- Bib pickup and last chance for in-person entry in non-timed event, 4:30-6:30 p.m., King Career Center.
