Alaskans flock to Hawaii and flourish in the Lavaman Triathlon

A large contingent of Alaskans headed to Hawaii this month -- no surprise there, not when it's still winter here.

But what those athletes accomplished was not the usual stuff -- they excelled in Sunday's Lavaman Triathlon Waikoloa.

Five Anchorage women finished in the top 15 among their gender in a race comprised of a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run, and three Anchorage men finished in the top 28.

And at least six athletes from Anchorage won their age group.

Jeni Winegarner finished third overall among women (2:18:18) and won the 55-59 age group. Lori Deschamps finished fourth overall (2:19.26), Amber Stull seized fifth overall (2:19:49) and won the 35-39 age group. Rebecca McKee claimed eighth overall (2:21:16) and Deana Watson earned 15th (2:27:51).

Also, Kendal Williams won the 19 and under division (2:31:22) and Diane Mohwinkel grabbed the 70-74 title (3:45:25).

On the men's side, Daniel Folmar of Anchorage bagged seventh overall in 2:01:21 to win the 35-39 age group.

Also, Jim Anderson finished 12th overall (2:10:27) and Jim Winegarner racked a 28th-place overall (2:15:02) in winning the 50-54 age group.
