Repairs force power outage Saturday for several towns south of Anchorage

Several communities south of Anchorage can expect to be without electricity for several hours early Saturday as Chugach Electric Association makes emergency repairs to transmission lines.

Chugach plans to cut power for about 1,900 customers in Indian, Bird, Girdwood, Portage and Whittier from 3:30 a.m. to about 6:30 a.m. Saturday, utility spokeswoman Sarah Wiggers said. Wiggers said the outage will allow workers to repair part of a structure holding up lines in Powerline Pass, which cuts through the Chugach Mountains from Anchorage to Turnagain Arm.

The utility learned Thursday of the problem, Wiggers said.

"We have helicopter patrols that patrol transmission lines. They found, on one of our structures, a bolt that is hanging on at this point but could come down and bring the line down," Wiggers said. "It was just critical to get it fixed."

It was unclear how the bolt was damaged, Wiggers said. An ongoing project rebuilding transmission lines through Turnagain Pass is not yet complete, so the communities affected by the Saturday outage could not be powered in the meantime by generators on the Kenai Peninsula, she said.
