An Alaska-NHL connection The Blog did not know

Doyle Woody,Dwoody@adn.com

Stick salute to Jeff Heminiak down at the Peninsula Clarion for informing The Blog of something which he did not know (insert your own joke here, dear reader): Former Kenai River Brown Bears defenseman Andrej Sustr, fresh out of Nebraska-Omaha recently became the first former Brown Bears player to play in the NHL.

Sustr debuted with the Tampa Bay Lightning and has played two games for the club, where he has two Alaska teammates in defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage and center Nate Thompson of Anchorage. At Nebraska-Omaha this season, he was teammates with defenseman Brian Cooper of Anchorage.

Sustr, a native of the Czech Republic, played 36 games for the Brown Bears in 2008-09, earning 1-7--8 totals, 58 penalty minutes and a -8 rating.

Sustr is something of a giant -- 6-foot-8, 225 pounds.
