Dog Blog: Last days for Paw Prince, an original Anchorage pet boutique

It's with mixed emotions that I share this news: Paw Prince, Anchorage's first -- and only -- dog boutique, is liquidating its assets. From now until the end of April, or sooner if supplies run out, the store will be offering 50 percent off all of its merchandise.

The store, located at 1120 E. Huffman Rd., will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays.

As the owner of two little dogs, I was excited when Melissa Wolf and Mark Robokoff first opened the store in 2007 in an Old Seward Highway strip mall. Laugh all you want, owners of dogs with thick natural coats, but mine need help surviving Alaska winters. I've bought countless fleece booties, several coats, food and treats at Paw Prince over the years, even after the business was purchased by Jann Palach in 2010 and moved to its Huffman location.

One thing I always liked about the store is that the owners put a premium on carrying the best-quality, wholesome products. In fact, in 2009, Paw Prince was awarded the Pet Product International Retailer of the Year Award as Best Boutique.

So I, for one, am sad to see it go and hope somehow it resurfaces again, either as Paw Prince or another shop that targets the need of this niche, but important, market.
