Letter: Young’s positive contributions outweigh “wetback” comment

Come on! Lighten up on Don Young. These attacks resemble juvenile birds in a nest pecking on the head of the most vulnerable among them hoping to make him jump. Yes “wetback” is an anachronistic, derogatory term associated with desperate people looking for opportunity their own country couldn’t provide who have taken advantage of a government not taking border security seriously enough, which precipitates far more serious consequences and burdens than agriculture labor.

The euphemistic term “undocumented” describes millions of people who’ve essentially broken the law by circumventing normal channels for U.S. citizenship which, for those who are equally desperate not benefiting from a common border, can only envy. “Gringo,” depending on how it’s used, is a derogatory term also. Name calling goes both ways.

Let’s keep this in perspective and consider how much good Don Young has done us, not unlike our beloved Senator Stevens, albeit Don isn’t loved so much as much as appreciated. Don does have his moments. Personally, I’d take Stevens (even Don) any day over Begich even if we had to have Ted artificially animated.
