City officials announced Wednesday that the count of absentee and questioned ballots from Tuesday's municipal election likely won't begin until April 12, more than a week away.

The municipal clerk's office is working with the Election Commission on the timeline and process for reviewing and counting those ballots, Clerk Barbara Jones said in a written statement emailed just after 6 p.m.

The review of questioned ballots, which can include those in which people voted outside of their designated polling place, began Wednesday, the clerk's office said. That review will continue until done.

The evening of April 11, the Election Commission expects to hold a public proceeding regarding which questioned and absentee ballots are being rejected.

The clerk's office did not return repeated calls on Wednesday to answer questions, including how many ballots remain to be counted. Only one race is close. Assembly Chairman Ernie Hall is up over write-in candidate Nick Moe, along with any other names written in, by fewer than 100 votes. The clerk's office has said the write-in votes won't be counted by name unless the total outnumbers the ballots cast for Hall.

More than 600 poll workers helped with Tuesday's election, the clerk's office said.
