A 48-year-old Homer man with 32 convictions on his record will soon be released from jail again, and that makes people nervous. William Daugherty has served eight months for his most recent assault conviction, which stemmed from an incident in which he was originally accused of kidnapping of an 18-year-old woman. Superior Court Judge Charles Huguelet worried that Daugherty hasn't served enough time for his various crimes but is powerless to keep Daugherty in jail because of sentencing limits, reports the Homer Tribune.
Prosecuting attorney Angela Garay asked the judge to find Daugherty a "worst offender" who held unlikely chances for rehabilitation in light of the previous convictions. Three convictions involved domestic violence incidents or crimes against young women victims. Two were felony counts, several for eluding police, escape, theft and assault.
"We would ask the judge to reflect community condemnation for Mr. Daugherty's actions," Garay said.
"Your prior record is pretty horrible," Huguelet said. "I don't know why you haven't served more time in the past for these crimes."
Judge Huguelet expressed hope that community pressure would encourage Daugherty to behave himself in the future, and he noted that Daugherty had completed an anger management program in jail.
