UAA runners register record 4x100 timing

The UAA women's track and field team, ranked No. 6 in the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association national poll, set a school record Saturday at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., where the Seawolves also managed to record three provisional NCAA qualifying times.

UAA's Sasha Halfyard, Rosie Smith, Grace Morgan and Haleigh Lloyd teamed to record a program-best 47.50 seconds in the women's 4x100-meter relay, beating the old UAA record of 47.67 set last May.

UAA's three provisional qualifying times came from Susan Bick, Susan Tanui and Katie Krehlik.

Bick clocked a season-best 2:12.34 in the women's 800 meters, taking first in the event and improving her provisional qualifying time.

Krehlik raced to a career-best 11:06.21 in the 3,000 steeplechase, also improving on her provisional qualifying mark.

Tanui, who last month posted an automatic qualifying time in the 3,000 steeplechase, turned in a provisional qualifying time in the 1,500 meters Saturday, finishing in 4:32.73.

Adding to UAA's Saturday success, Lloyd also managed to post a victory in the women's 400 hurdles, Karolin Anders won the women's long jump while both the UAA men's and women's 4x400 relay teams claimed first.

Sims sweeps hurdles

Dimond's Taylor Sims swept the girls hurdle events Saturday in the Big C Relays at The Dome, where track and field athletes from 40 schools around Alaska competed for the second straight day.

Sims barely escaped with a win in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 16.71 seconds to edge West's Mekayla Winchester (16.72) by .01 second. Sims' victory in the 300 hurdles was a runaway by comparison. Sims clocked a 48.88 to beat South's Elissa Esplin (49.33) by nearly a half second.

The boys 300 hurdles produced Saturday's tightest finish, ending in a tie for first between South's Wade Ellis and Skyview's Tim Duke. Both runners finished in 41.63, just .2 seconds ahead of South's Andrew West (41.83).

West did blaze to victory, however, in the 110 hurdles, crossing the line at 15.32, outpacing Eagle River's Brandon Parish (15.62).
