Letter: Slur was common only with bigots

I am a 71-year-old woman who also grew up in California's Central Valley with knowledge of local farming practices in the old days Rep. Young referenced. The term "wetback" was always used as a racial slur. Always. I was taught as a child that if one didn't want to be thought a racial bigot, don't use racist language.

Rep. Young has removed all doubt of his bigotry toward the people who worked so hard on his father's farm by not only using the term but then defending its use with the flimsy excuse that it was common practice in those days. No it wasn't.
