FOUR WEST POINT CADETS NAMED TRUMAN SCHOLARS – April 11, 2013
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation announced today that Cadets Erin Mauldin, Albuquerque, N.M., and Ahmad Nasir, Anchorage, Alaska, earned a 2013 Truman Scholarship. The academy was one of eight schools to earn two scholarships.
They are two of 62 students from 293 U.S. colleges and universities to be selected for the prestigious scholarship and will have the opportunity to further their education with a scholarship valued at approximately $30,000 for two years at any accredited university in the world.
"Cadets Erin Mauldin and Ahmad Nasir are tremendous representatives of West Point's Corps of Cadets and highly deserving recipients of Truman Scholarships. Our cadets continue to receive great recognition in national and international scholarship competitions. This is an acknowledgment of the hard work and dedication of our cadets and the commitment of our faculty," said Dean of the Academic Board, Brig. Gen. Timothy Trainor.
"I am incredibly humbled and honored to have been named a Truman Scholar, and I look forward to joining a community of change agents that are so committed to the notion of public service," said Cadet Ahmad Nasir, an American Politics and Arabic major, who plans to pursue a Masters in Public Policy in International and Global Affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
Cadet Mauldin is an International History and Environmental Science double major.
The Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as the federal memorial to our 33rd President. The Foundation awards scholarships for college students to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service. The activities of the Foundation are supported by a special trust fund in the U.S. Treasury. There have been 2,670 Truman Scholars elected since the first awards were made in 1977.
West Point cadets have earned 29 Truman Scholarships since first competing in 1992.
