UAA's Parker uncorks record javelin throw

Sophomore Cody Parker broke his own school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference javelin record Saturday to highlight UAA's performance at the Beach Invitational track and field meet in Cerritos, Calilf.

Parker's toss of 234 feet, 4 inches (71.43 meters) topped the 35-competitor field and surpassed teammate Franz Burghagen for the No. 1 mark in NCAA Division II this season. Parker, of Comox, British Columbia, had previously ranked fourth.

On the track, sophomore Isaac Kangogo raced to a UAA season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3 minutes, 50.65 seconds in the 1,500 meters. Kangogo, of Eldoret, Kenya, placed sixth among college racers and was the top D-II performer in the field.

Sophomore sprinter Grace Morgan, who is also from British Columbia, set personal bests in both the 100 and 200, finishing in 12.12 seconds and 24.24 seconds, respectively. She shaved one-tenth of a second off her school-record time of 24.34 in the 200.

Soldotna junior Ivy O'Guinn, fresh off a school record in the 800 on Friday, blazed to a 4:26.64 time in Saturday's 1500, improving her NCAA provisional status by nearly one second.
