Letter: American voices aren't being heard on justice for detainees

The 11-year imprisonment of men at Guantanamo who've never been charged with any crime signifies a troubling decline in the moral conscience of Americans. Hunger striking to protest their illegal and immoral incarceration, and despite being subject to painful and degrading force feeding, some of these men are reportedly close to death.

The U.S. Supreme Court of an earlier time denied African-American slave Dred Scott his petition for freedom, reasoning that the Declaration of Independence phrase "all men are created equal" did not apply to the African race.

Are Muslims the new Dred Scott as far as Americans are concerned? Where are the voices of Alaska's congressional delegation calling for the government to do the right thing? Where are the voices of the American people speaking out for justice?
