Letter: UAA athletic director is doing great job for school, athletes

Steve Cobb is the best athletic director UAA has ever had. The recent fallout from the hockey community, while having points to consider, is way off base to demand his removal.

Athletics is always evaluated on results:

• Since 2007, UAA teams have combined for 15 conference championships and won nine NCAA West Region championships.

• Nine of the past 10 years, student-athletes combined for a 3.0-plus GPA.

• UAA has placed in the top 10 percent of all 300 D-II programs for overall performance, currently rank in the top 4 percent in the country.

• Our new arena, Alaska Airlines Center, is scheduled to open fall 2014. This arena will become a beacon for all Anchorage to enjoy.

• In spite of a terrible climate for basketball tournaments, our Shootout has survived and is improving its field each year. The Fairbanks tournament is gone.

Our program is in the best shape ever. More importantly, Dr. Cobb is a tremendous leader. You may not always agree with him, but you always know where you stand. I admire that in a person.
