UAA sophomore Cody Thomas won three events -- he posted a Great Northwest Athletic Conference decathlon record in the 100 meters -- and placed second in two others Monday to grab the first day lead in the GNAC Multis Championships at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
Thomas blitzed the 100 in 10.92 seconds to shatter the previous conference decathlon standard of 11.18, and also won the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and 400 meters (50.11). The Kiwi claimed second in the long jump (20-3.5) and shot put (36-0.75), and totaled 3,555 points, which gives him a 370-point lead heading into Tuesday's finale in the 10-event test.
Meanwhile, sophomore Karolin Anders sits second in the heptathlon after one day with 2,992 points and trails only Seattle Pacific's Ali Worthen (3,224). Also, UAA junior Haleigh Lloyd is in fourth place (2,883) and sophomore Grace Morgan is 10th (2,235).
Anders won the shot put with a personal-best of 37-8.75, took third in the high jump (5-4.25), and fifth in both the 100 hurdles (15.28) and 200 meters (26.10). Morgan won the 200 in 24.78.
GIRLS PREP SOCCER
South 2, E. River 1
South scored a goal in each half Monday to earn a 2-1 victory over Eagle River in girls Cook Inlet Conference soccer action at The Dome.
Sophomore Callie Orizotti opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a header off a corner kick from Ashtyn Evans. Freshman Shelby Woolston extended the Wolverines' lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute, when scored off an assist from Claire Lovering.
Eagle River's Erin Haslund scored late in the match.
BICYCLE RACING
Records fall in ABC time trial
Helped by a strong tailwind, Daniel Folmar and Sheryl Loan obliterated the men's and women's course records, respectively, Sunday in the Arctic Bicycle Club's Seward Highway 35-kilometer time trial.
Folmar's time of 40 minutes, 5.6 seconds on the 21.75-mile course slashed nearly six minutes off the previous record, and eight men in all finished faster than the previous standard.
Loan blistered a 46:15.0, which knocked nearly four minutes off the previous women's record and led a charge of eight women who bested the previous mark.
