The Navy's new troop and equipment transport, the USS Anchorage, will arrive at the Port of Anchorage Wednesday. The vessel, technically an "amphibious transport dock ship," will be commissioned in a ceremony here Saturday.
Several public events will take place while the ship is in port.
From 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, a community block party to welcome the sailors will be at Town Square. "Dock at the Block" will feature music, food, entertainment and children's activities. A beer and wine garden will be open. Sixth Avenue will be closed between G and E streets from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; traffic will be detoured onto Seventh Avenue.
From 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, the public will be able to tour the ship. Access will be available only by shuttle buses leaving from the Northway and Sears malls.
Persons wanting to take the tour may have to go through metal detectors or other security measures. Those over 18 will need a government-issued I.D. The ship is not handicapped accessible. Virtual tours will be available for those unable to access the ship. No smoking will be allowed.
Visitors should not bring backpacks or large handbags. Knives, glass containers, toy weapons and bottled water in containers larger than 20 ounces are prohibited.
Cellphones and cameras will be permitted but may be restricted in designated areas.
