Palmer Golf Course opens

Temporary greens and brown fairways greeted golfers Wednesday at Palmer Golf Course, the first course in the area to open for play.

"It was a pretty decent turnout," said George Collum III, director of golf operations. At one point, he said, the mercury hit 49 degrees.

Ten holes are open (1 through 7 and 14 through 18), two of them on temporary greens. Greens fee is $15 for now, and no carts are allowed.

"It is still wet, and the ground thaw hasn't happened yet," Collum said. "It'll be a week-and-a-half or two weeks before carts (are allowed) and the driving range opens."

Collum said all 18 holes may be open Saturday, four on temporary greens. Greens fees will go up to $20 when that happens.

He recommends tee times for those wishing to play this weekend. Call 907-745-4653 to book a tee time or for more information.
