One of the biggest movies of 2013 comes out this week, "Iron Man 3." The vaunted mega-blockbuster franchise's latest installment directly follows last year's "Avengers" with a story centered around Tony Stark. The movie is expected to generate hundreds of millions worldwide, and if you're intrigued enough to read the continuing adventures of the character, you might want to check your local comic book shop.
In fact, Saturday brings the best day of the year to visit a comic retailer: Free Comic Book Day. It's a day where comic publishers and retailers unite to share free comics of all varieties to readers.
Every year brings a different batch of new and different comics, and this year's group is particularly great. Highlights include "The Walking Dead" from Image Comics (perfect for fans of the TV show), Marvel Comics' "Infinity," which features the villain from the next "Avengers" movie, and a bevy of other fantastic titles.
The two books I'm sure to get are Archaia's "Rust" / "Mouse Guard" flip book and Red 5's "Atomic Robo & Friends." Both books are high quality comics, and for those with kids, they're also friendly to all ages and new readers.
"There are comic stories for all tastes," shared John Weddleton of Bosco's, and in Anchorage, Bosco's in Spenard is the best place to go on Saturday. The long-time favorite of local comic fans has an array of sales to go along with the free comics, and they're certain to have the largest selection available. Not only that, but they're strongly encouraging people to show up in costume, as you get more free comics if you do.
Other options include the Bosco's in the Dimond Center and the Loussac Library, but both of those will have a limited selection of titles.
