Iowa's out, Green Bay's in 2013 Shootout

Beth Bragg

Lured away by big money and big-name competition, the NIT runnerup Iowa Hawkeyes have pulled out of this year's Great Alaska Shootout.

They will be replaced by Wisconsin-Green Bay, UAA said Thursday.

The Hawkeyes backed out of the Shootout in favor of an estimated $250,000 payday at the Battle 4 Atlantis, an eight-team tournament in the Bahamas held the same week as the Shootout, a Thanksgiving week staple in Anchorage since 1978.

The Battle 4 Atlantis pays $2 million in guarantees, or appearance fees, to teams. Shootout guarantees have never been that high -- they average in the five-figure range per team and rarely hit six figures.

Iowa, which is coming off a 25-13 season that marked the second most wins in school history, would have been the first Big 10 team to play in the Shootout since Michigan in 2007.

"Obviously we're very disappointed to lose Iowa," said UAA associate athletic director Tim McDiffett. "We're very fortunate at this late date to get a replacement."

In the Bahamas, the Hawkeyes will join a field that includes Kansas and Villanova. The Shootout's headline teams are Harvard, a second-round NCAA Tournament team this year, and NIT qualifiers Denver and Indiana State.

Winner of the 1986 Shootout and runnerup to Duke in 1995, Iowa will likely surrender a slice of its Battle 4 Atlantis guarantee to UAA. Teams that sign Shootout contracts agree to a buyout clause in the event they pull out of the tournament.

Breaking the contract can cost as much as $150,000, but how much Iowa will pay has yet to be determined, McDiffett said. UAA just learned of Iowa's decision recently.

In Green Bay, the Shootout gets a team that was 18-16 last season (10-6 in the Horizon League). The Phoenix boast a 7-foot-1 center in Alec Brown and a mid-major Freshman All-American in 6-7 forward Jordan Fouse.

The rest of the Shootout field includes UAA, Texas Christian, Pepperdine and Tulsa.

The UAA men will face Texas Christian in the first round of the Nov. 26-30 tournament at Sullivan Arena. Always the only Division II team in an otherwise all-Division I tournament, the Seawolves are 35-70 in Shootout history.

The UAA-TCU game is one of two men's games on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Tulsa and Indiana State will meet in the other.

In Thursday's first-round games, it's Green Bay versus Pepperdine and Denver versus Harvard.

In the two-day, four-team women's Shootout, six-time tournament champion UAA will meet UC-Riverside and Georgetown will play Nicholls State in first-round action Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Game times and television coverage will be announced later, UAA said.
