Letter: Happy Mother’s Day to host mom from a foreign exchange student

My name is Sivesh Sangar, and I am a high school AFS Exchange Student from Malaysia.

This year, I was hosted by the Smith family. As I think about heading home this June, I want to thank my entire host family, but especially my host mom, Mary Kancewick.

Being away from home and my natural parents was hard, but I fit in really easily with help from my amazing family, especially  my host mom. I really thank her for hosting me and allowing me to have an amazing time with wonderful and memorable experiences.

I wanted to travel around the world and then I had this chance to come to the U.S. and experience high school. I told myself, why waste this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? So here I am, in Eagle River, Alaska, enjoying the home, school and town. My host mom helped me a lot even before I arrived and never stopped helping me ever since.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!
