SOFTBALL

East Thunderbirds 8, Juneau 4

The East Thunderbirds ran their softball record to 10-0 Saturday with a championship-game win over Juneau in the East-West softball tournament.

Carrie Sauerbrey clubbed a two-run single to fuel a fifth-inning rally en route to an 8-4 win in the title game at Albrecht Fields.

In the third-place game, pitcher Nikki Olsen allowed just two baserunners in a five-inning shutout to lead West past West Valley 10-0.

Juneau led East 4-1 through four innings on home runs by Randi Held, Kayla Balovich and Maline Murray before East roared back. The T-Birds scored four runs on four hits in the fifth inning to grab a 5-4 lead and tacked on three more runs in the sixth.

"We've got a lot of those Nunaka Valley girls who have played in a lot of big games," said East coach Paul Schoenborn, referring to the Little League softball juggernaut that includes several East players. "They think, 'We know we're gonna do it, we just don't know when.' Meanwhile they're giving me a heart attack."

West, which trailed 14-2 before mounting a comeback, got three hits apiece from Mikayla Teel, Nanea Tali and Temple Vice.
