Snow means more changes for prep teams

Weather hasn't been kind to those in charge of scheduling high school sports this spring, and Friday's snowfall brought about some fresh challenges.

Cook Inlet Conference softball organizers moved all of Friday and Saturday's games to next week. Two Friday baseball games were postponed to Saturday and three of eight soccer matches scheduled for outdoor play Saturday have rescheduled to play in The Dome.

The Dome is donating the use of the facility to the Anchorage School District, general manager Dino Sutherland said.

"We're partners in this," said Sutherland. "We know this (bad weather) is unusual and we want to give back."

The Anchorage School District is a primary user of The Dome, and its contract usually runs through the second or third week of April, Sutherland said.

Cold, snowy weather already forced ASD to extend its contract by a couple of weeks, and Sutherland said the district was out of allocated funds for additional Dome rentals. So The Dome donated the time.

"They're saving hundreds and hundreds of dollars," Sutherland said.

Matches will be held at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. at The Dome. Five other matches are scheduled to be played outdoors on what is supposed to be the final day of the CIC soccer regular season.
