East and Chugiak started strong in the first two rounds of the Cook Inlet Conference softball tournament at Albrecht Fields on Tuesday, each picking up a pair of wins to remain the only two undefeated teams in the double-elimination format.
East blew away Service 17-1 in the first round and came from behind for a 5-2 win over South in the second. Chugiak rolled past Eagle River 12-0 to open the tournament, then edged West 2-0. East and West will square off Wednesday at 7:45 p.m., for a spot in the CIC championship game.
Sydney Smith was the star for both East wins, pitching two complete games and hitting home runs in each. She went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs in the first-round win over Service, then struck out eight in another complete game against South.
South led East 2-1 going into the fifth inning, but East struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth and Smith blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to add insurance and help the Thunderbirds remain undefeated.
"I tell the girls anybody can beat anybody," said East coach Paul Schoenborn. "We had to fight for this one. It was a good game."
After dispatching of Eagle River behind a one-hitter from Katy Bakker and a two-run homer from Elle Gray, Chugiak scored two unearned runs to win a second-round game against West. The Eagles were stifled by the pitching of Carly Metcalf, who allowed two hits
"It was one of those games: We capitalized on their mistakes, they didn't capitalize on ours," said Chugiak coach Jim Huber. "Carly pitched a gem."
Metcalf needed to be sharp, because West pitcher Pauline Tufi was on her game. Tufi, who propelled the Eagles to a 7-2 first-round win over Dimond by striking out 12 and allowing one hit in seven innings, only allowed one hit to Chugiak and struck out 13.
West's first-round win included two hits from Jamie Bingham, three RBIs from Manea Tali and two RBIs from Erin Goudreau.
The Eagles fell to the losers' bracket, where they will await the winner of an elimination game between Service and Bartlett.
South, which earned a 9-8 first-round victory over Bartlett, also fell to the losers' bracket and will take on the winner of an elimination game between Dimond and Eagle River.
South's win included two hits, two runs and two RBIs from Calli Albright. Bayli Mohl added two hits and a run, with Rachel Eytalis driving in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
East 10, Service 1
The East softball team completed an undefeated regular season Monday, taking down Service 10-1 in a CIC game at Albrecht Fields.
East, which went 18-0 overall and 11-0 in CIC play, got a complete game from Sydney Smith, who gave up three hits and struck out four. Gabby Meyerson came up with three hits, three runs and an RBI. Morgan Hill drove in four in a 3-for-3 effort.

West 9, Chugiak 4
West's Ted Kelly went 4 for 5 and scored twice Monday to lead the Eagles to a 9-4 CIC baseball win over Chugiak at Mulcahy Stadium.
A two-run double from Andrew McAlister sparked a three-run third inning for the Eagles, who also put up three runs in the seventh. Dalton Chapman struck out 11 and walked five to earn a seven-inning, complete-game victory.
Chugiak scored all four of its runs in the fourth inning, getting a two-run double from Hunter Hanson.
Dimond 2, Eagle River 0
Grant Remmer pitched a two-hitter, striking out 11 Monday to back a 2-0 win for Dimond in a CIC baseball game against Eagle River at Mulcahy Stadium.
Sheldon Rouzan and Brandon Sakumoto each notched hits and scored runs for the Lynx.
David Fuller and Colby LeBlanc accounted for Eagle River's hits -- Fuller recording a single and LeBlanc belting a double. Fuller also pitched six inning for the Wolves, striking out two and allowing three hits.

West, South lead All-CIC selections
After claiming the top two spots in the Cook Inlet Conference last week, the West and South boys soccer teams each landed a CIC-best five players on the All-CIC first team.
West goalkeeper Hunter Dunn joined teammates Carson Klever, Max Osgood, Henry Vasquez, Abdou Sallah. South goalkeeper Griffin Toomey joined teammates Ronald Perry, Hayden Western, Eyob Imlach and Conor Gonzalez.
Dimond led the girls all-conference first team with four players on the squad. Bobbye Pendleton, Aaliyah Lewis, Leah Swiss and goalie Katleyn Sweeney were honored for the Lynx.

Hayes is top shot
Shooters braved snow and wind in last weekend's trapshooting Doubles Marathon at Birchwood Recreation Shooting Park, where Wasilla's Jon Hayes won the doubles competition and shot the highest overall score.
Hayes hit 50 straight targets during doubles competition, his first such streak. He also managed two streaks of 49 straight. Hayes hit 471 of 500 targets to win doubles, and hit 744 of 800 overall.
