28 dogs, puppies taken into protective custody from Big Lake lot

Twenty-eight dogs that were starving and had a serious skin condition were taken into protective custody from a Big Lake dog lot by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough this week, a spokeswoman said.

Borough animal control removed the dogs Thursday from the lot of George Shell after serving a search warrant to evaluate the animals, the borough said in a statement posted on its website Friday.

Shell was cited for failure to provide humane care, not adequately treating the animals for lice and/or mange, not supplying sufficient food or water and having an unlicensed kennel, the borough said. The borough seized 24 dogs and four puppies, which are being held at the Mat-Su Animal Care facility.

"At this time the Borough's Veterinarian, Dr. Katrina Zwolinski, is evaluating the dogs and prescribing treatment to include rehydration, therapy for malnutrition and serious skin conditions," the borough said.
