Man in critical condition after South Anchorage shooting

A 19-year-old man is in critical condition following an early Monday morning shooting in South Anchorage, according to Anchorage police.

The shooting was reported to police at 1:24 a.m. on the 9600 block of Victor Road. Police arrived to find a man outside the residence, suffering a gunshot wound to his upper body. Witnesses told police the shooting victim had been fighting with a 45-year-old acquaintance at the home, said department spokeswoman Dani Myren.

"A handgun was introduced into the argument, and a fight over the gun ensued," Myren wrote in a statement to reporters. "At one point during the fight, what appears to be a single round was discharged from the weapon, striking one of the men."

Both men were at the home when police arrived. The man who was not shot was taken into custody and interviewed at police headquarters, Myren said.

He was later released. No one has been charged in the shooting, police said.

Myren would not name the two men, citing the ongoing investigation.
