Bethel man drowns while attempting to swim lake, police say

A 23-year-old Bethel man drowned Monday night when trying to swim across a lake near his home, according to Bethel police.

Albert Swope had gone egg hunting with a friend Monday when the pair decided to attempt to swim a lake at the northeast end of town, Police Chief Larry Elarton wrote in a statement to reporters.

Police were notified of the drowning at 8:40 p.m. The other swimmer tried to revive Swope before running for help, Elarton wrote. Residents pulled Swope to shore but could not resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corp. hospital.
