An Anchorage man is dead after collapsing Wednesday on the edge of Copper River while dipnetting for salmon near Chitina, according to Alaska State Troopers.
The man, 57-year-old Ramiro Rivera, had been camping and fishing with his 62-year-old brother, who was on a trip to Alaska from California, troopers said in a written statement Thursday.
The brother called 911 about 6:50 a.m. Wednesday. He said later that the younger Rivera, who had high cholesterol, fell to the ground and went unconscious as he was trying to pull his net out of the water, according to troopers. Someone nearby tried to resuscitate Rivera, and Kenny Lake medics continued that effort unsuccessfully until about 7:20 a.m., troopers said.
