Thursday in the Alaska Baseball League

ABL late night

It's the time of year when the Alaska becomes the land of the Midnight Sun baseball game.

At 10:30 p.m. Friday, for the 108th time in history, Fairbanks will host the Midnight Sun Classic, one of Alaska's iconic events. No artificial lights are used during the entire game, and at the first break after midnight, the Alaska Flag Song is performed.

The Goldpanners will host the San Francisco Seals in a game that will mark the 54th time the Goldpanners have played in the Midnight Sun Classic.

On Saturday night in Anchorage, the Glacier Pilots will host the Bucs in the fifth annual Solstice Showdown. First pitch is at 10 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium.

Pilots 5, Chinooks 0

The Anchorage Glacier Pilots shutout the Chugiak Chinooks for the third straight night Thursday at Loretta French Field, using six strong innings from starter Sean Adler.

A Brody Russell two-run single put the Pilots on the board in the fifth inning. The Pilots added two more runs in the sixth on a Dayne Parker sacrifice fly and an RBI-single from Jeff Moberg.

Miners 2, Oilers 1

The Mat-Su Miners and Peninsula Oilers required extra innings for the second straight night at Seymour Memorial Park, where the Miners prevailed 2-1 in 11 innings.

Mat-Su's Spencer Mahoney drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 11th to bring in A.J. Simcox for the game-winning run.

A one-out single from Turner Clouse in the bottom of the 11th gave the Oilers hope for a comeback. After a Brody Greer strikeout pushed the Oilers to their final out, Clouse was caught attempting to steal second base to end the game.

Bucs 13, Legion All-Stars 2

Eleven different players crossed the plate and eight delivered hits Thursday for the Anchorage Bucs in a 13-2 nonleague win over the Legion All-Stars at Mulcahy Stadium.

The big hit was a two-out, bases-loaded triple by Michael Strentz, who helped the Bucs to a 7-1 lead after two innings.

The Legion team mustered four hits.

Goldpanners 3, San Francisco Seals 0

Fairbanks Goldpanners left-handed pitcher Drew Mitrisin retired 15 of the 17 batters he faced to close out the last five innings of a 3-0 shutout over the San Francisco Seals in a non-league game at Growden Memorial Park.

Mitrisin struck out two and induced 10 ground-ball outs, the last of which came when first-baseman Nolan Meadows dug out a low throw from third-baseman Chance Abrath to close the game and prevent a run coming in from third base.
