Letter: American flag should be flown on Flag Day and all year round

I am responding to the thoughtful letter from Johnny Rusch that appeared on June 17 in the Anchorage Daily News. He expressed his disappointment in seeing no American flags flying on June 14. I share his disappointment.

The first national observance of Flag Day was on June 14, 1877. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916 calling for a nationwide observance of Flag Day to be held each year on June 14. In 1949, Congress gave the holiday permanence.

The Col. John Mitchell Chapter, DAR, recognizes those who fly the flag on a regular basis.

I would like to remind people to continue flying the flag. We are fortunate to have nylon flags or other material that can be flown in inclement weather. Replace flags when they are worn, faded or tattered.

Our chapter also gives a very nice certificate to people who fly their flag regularly. You may also submit the name of your friends or neighbors for recognition. We award the certificates at our March "Awards" night.
