Letter: Mother Nature knows better

The far right religious Republicans in the House of Representatives are grandstanding again, passing legislation trying to further restrict a woman's right of choice. They know that this legislation will never become law. Their continued efforts seem to center around the concept that sacred life begins with conception. Mother Nature disagrees. Medical research shows that in confirmed pregnancies 15 percent to 20 percent will end as spontaneous abortions. Recently developed, highly sensitive hCCG tests indicate that 60 percent to 70 percent of conceptions end as spontaneous abortions. These frequently occur before the woman has missed a period. There are numerous causes for this, the most common being chromosomal abnormality.

In 2008 there were 4.248 million live births, giving a confirmed pregnancy figure of 500,000 spontaneous abortions, while the hCCG test indicates the actual number is 7.5 million spontaneous abortions in this country alone in just one year.

Under the Republicans' concept, do these abnormal embryos and fetuses have a soul, and if so, what happens to it?
