Pilots in shutdown mode

Coming in to Saturday's late-night showdown with the Anchorage Bucs, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots were on a major defensive role.

The Pilots had held opponents scoreless for 30 straight innings, breaking the old team record of 23 innings. The streak started with three scoreless innings against the Mat-Su Miners on June 17 and continued with three nine-inning shutouts against the Chugiak Chinooks last week.

Miners 9, Chinooks 6

The Mat-Su Miners handed the Chugiak Chinooks their seventh straight loss Saturday, winning 9-6 at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

The Chinooks took a 6-5 lead into the seventh inning, but things started to unravel in the bottom of the seventh when Mat-Su's Greg Partyka singled to drive in Christin Stewart and tie it at 6-6. Jack Amaro later drew a base a bases-loaded walk from Chugiak reliever Kenneth Knudsen to put the Miners up 7-6, and A.J. Simcox followed with a two-run single off Knudsen to make it 9-6.

Dylan Stuart earned a win in relief for the Miners, with Tyler Martin pitching the final two innings for a save.

Goldpanners win Midnight Sun game

The Fairbanks Goldpanners capitalized on early offense to secure a 4-1 victory over the San Francisco Seals in Friday's 108th playing of the Midnight Sun game at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.

The Goldpanners scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the second. Payden Cawley-Lamb, who scored the game's first run, finished with two of the Golpanners' seven hits. Michael Bennett was the winning pitcher, striking out three in three innings and allowing two hits.
