Fireweed bike race almost at capacity

Fireweed filling up

Entries in the Fireweed, Alaska's biggest bicycle race, have almost hit capacity for this year's July 12-13 event.

Nearly 700 people have entered the race, which has a limit of 750 riders.

The event consists of five races, all of which start at the Sheep Mountain Lodge on the Glenn Highway. The longest races, the 400-mile solo race and the 400-mile relay, begin Friday and goes to Valdez and back.

All of the other races -- 200 miles, 100 miles and 50 miles -- begin Saturday at Sheep Creek. The 200-miler ends in Valdez, while the others follow out-and-back routes.

Registration is $80 and available online only at fireweed400.com.
