Authorities are investigating a house fire that injured two people and may have resulted in the death of one or more people Friday morning in Nunam Iqua, troopers say.
Some of the occupants of the home were unaccounted for as of Friday night, said Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen.
The fire was reported to troopers at 6:20 a.m. in the Yukon River village. A trooper in nearby St. Mary's was told the fire involved "possible fatalities," according to a trooper dispatch posted online.
Nunam Iqua officials could not be reached for comment. A St. Mary's trooper and a deputy state fire marshal visited the village Friday to investigate, troopers said.
Two people who were in the house at the time of the fire were flown to Bethel and treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns, according to troopers.
Asked if any bodies had been recovered, Ipsen said investigators were still sifting through the burned home.
"At this point we don't have a firm count on how many people were at the home and who actually live at the home," she said.
