Weekend picks: Kilts, car show and street fair

A few of the fun things you can do locally this weekend:

32nd Annual Alaska Scottish Highland Games

Gates open at 8 a.m. today at Eagle River Lions Park for athletic, piping, drumming and dancing competitions plus live music and the chance to sample single-malt whiskies. $15, $5 for children. Shuttle buses are available from Eagle River High School and Eagle River Walmart. Overflow parking is available at Gruening Middle School or the Eagle River Road Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mountain View Street Fair

Noon to 4 p.m. today at the Mountain View Neighborhood Library, 120 Bragaw St. Live music, magic, activities and cheap food.

17th Annual Kool Kruz

9 a.m. today at the Mall at Sears. Rescheduled after the May 18 snowfall, auto clubs will show off their classics, hot rods and muscle cars followed by a caravan to the Alaska Raceway Park on the Old Glenn Highway.

Midnight Sun Service Dogs Dog Daze

9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the 907 Paintball Field at the South Anchorage Sports Park, Timberlane Drive and West Klatt Road. Music, face painting, a bouncy house and, oh yeah, a paintball tournament for charity.

Beach Volleyball

9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Springer Park, 3809 Arctic Blvd. Men, women and coed doubles tournaments sponsored by Volleyball Alaska.

Mud Race

9 a.m. today at Chuck Albrecht Ball Fields on Elmore Road south of Tudor Road. Runners get good and dirty to raise funds for Anchorage Community Mental Health Services on a 5-k course with 13 obstacles. There's a free mini-muddy 2-k run for children ages 7 to 13.

Run/Walk for Epilepsy

Registration at 9:30 a.m. today at Margaret Eagan Sullivan Park on Westchester Lagoon. The 5-k run/walk starts at 10:30 a.m., and the celebration ceremony takes place at 11:30 a.m.

Garage sale

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at American Legion Post 33, 21426 Old Glenn Highway. The post holds a swap meet every Saturday; all proceeds go to Alaska veterans.
