Alaska Baseball League for Saturday, June 29

Chinooks 3, Bucs 2

Nicholas Covello and Drew Turbin drove in fifth-inning runs Saturday to break a tie and lead Chugiak past the Bucs 3-2 at Mulcahy Stadium.

Down 3-1, the Bucs weren’t able to take full advantage of an eighth-inning rally. They loaded the bases with two outs and got an RBI single from Tyler Coolbaugh to make it 3-2, but they stranded three runners when Taylor Ward flew out to center field.

The game was knotted 1-1 after one inning. Turbin scored for the Chinooks on a Tyler Krahn single in the top of the inning, and Chase Compton drove in a run for the Bucs in the bottom of the inning.

The win went to Caleb Dirks, who scattered three hits in five innings.

Panners 4, Oilers 2

Four hits plus two errors added up to a four-run sixth inning that carried the Fairbanks Goldpanners to a 4-2 victory over the Oilers at Growden Park.

Chance Abrath’s two-out single was the big hit in the sixth for the Goldpanners, but just as critical were the two Oilers errors that opened the door for two unearned runs.

The Oilers mounted a late comeback, scoring once in the eighth and once in the ninth. They had a run in and the bases loaded with one out in the eighth, but closer Kevin Sprague struck out the last two batters on his way to the save.

Miners 6, Pilots 4

The Mat-Su Miners pounced on a new pitcher in the eighth inning Saturday to grab a 6-4 win over the Pilots and first place in the Alaska Baseball League.

With the game tied 3-3 after seven innings at Mulcahy Stadium, the Miners greeted reliever T.J. Kendzora with a five-hit, three-run rally.

Gio Brusa’s leadoff single was followed by Christin Stewart’s home run, and one out later the Miners put together three straight hits, the last of them a two-run single by Jack Amoro.
