A man is in critical condition after being shot outside Bernie's Bungalow Lounge downtown early Friday in what Anchorage police say was a targeted attack.
Police haven't named the man. They are talking to witnesses, working to arrest suspects and looking for their vehicle, police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said.
The man on Thursday night was visiting a relative who works at Bernie's, at Seventh Avenue and D Street. He left the bar, came back, then just before 1 a.m. Friday walked out through the rear gate on Seventh Avenue.
As he was leaving, a vehicle pulled up, another man got out and shot the victim four times, police said. One of the shots hit a leg artery. A Bernie's security guard jumped in to perform first aid, Castro said.
"This guy had the tools and skills to do something and most likely saved this guy's life because he was bleeding pretty bad," she said.
The shooter got back in the vehicle and fled.
Medics took the man to an Anchorage hospital, where he underwent surgery, Castro said. He was in critical condition, she said.
Police say no bystanders were hit. Investigators aren't releasing details yet, including the type of vehicle.
