Three Alaskans earned cash in World Series of Poker events recently, including an Anchorage man who cashed for the third time in the 44th annual event in Las Vegas.
In all, at least 20 Alaskans have cashed in the event that features more than 60 tournaments and is now in the midst of the Main Event, a No-Limit Texas Hold 'em game that requires a $10,000 buy-in, or entry fee, and attracted 6,352 players.
Greg Hobson of Anchorage recently finished 119th in a $1,000 buy-in No-Limit event to earn $2,854. His third cash in this year's WSOP raised his winnings to $21,679. Richard Muhlenbruch of Anchorage finished 286th in that same event, which drew 2,883 players, and earned $1,894.
Also, Jeffrey Leonard of Anchorage finished 204th in a $1,111 buy-in No-Limit game that featured nearly 5,000 players. He earned $3,167.

Mittelstadt, Friestone breeze to 5-K victories
Gilly Szweda Mittelstadt and Sarah Friestone ran to victory Sunday in the Boondocks Breakaway 5-kilometer race at Kincaid Park.
Mittelstadt paced the men in 17 minutes, 30 seconds to win by 22 seconds. Friestone's 20:58 put her more than two minutes ahead of the next fastest woman.

211-pound halibut worth $10,000
A Tennessee man is $10,000 richer after hooking the winning fish on the penultimate day of the month-long Seward Halibut Tournament.
David Law of Maryville, Tenn., landed the 211-pound winner after a 33-minute battle.
His catch bumped James Boyer of Reno, Nev., into second place. Boyer caught his 204.2-pound fish on June 27, three days before the derby ended.
145.6-pounder makes Valdez leaderboard
Richard Hanson of Haslett, Mich., moved into third place in the summer-long Valdez halibut derby last weekend by reeling in a 145.6-pound flatfish.
Hanson won a variety of prizes for being the weekly winner of the derby, which runs until Sept. 1. In the overall standings, his catch trails Jeff Johnson's 208.6-pounder and Laurie Deakin's 158-pounder.

UAA adds 3 gymnasts
National-class gymnasts from Washington, Oregon and Virginia will join UAA's gymnastics team next season.
Nicole Larkin of Kennewick, Wash., Brice Mizell of Mill City, Ore., and Natalia Joyce of Virginia Beach., Va., will join eight veterans from last season's team, which broke 17 school records.
All three newcomers boast top-50 performances at the Junior Olympics national championships.
"All three of these young women bring great all-around skill sets, and will blend with our returners to give us improved depth on every apparatus," UAA coach Paul Stoklos said in a press release.
