Letter: NRA doesn't speak for gun owner

I grew up shooting and hunting (originally in Iowa, later in Alaska). My father had about 50 guns (and lots of ammunition) when he died. He gave me a deer rifle on my 10th birthday. My wife learned to shoot in high school, and I've taught our kids to shoot, which our son especially enjoys.

But the National Rifle Association (NRA) does not speak for me. I favor universal background checks, a ban on assault rifles without a special permit, limits on magazine size, testing and licensing (as with driving or piloting), required safe storage, and required insurance. (None of these things are inconsistent with "a well ordered militia.")

The NRA doesn't speak for me. We need an association for Sensible American Gun Owners (SAGO).
