Stretch of Crow Pass Trail reopened after reports of a bear

A stretch of the Crow Pass Trail in Chugach State Park trail closed after an incident involving a brown bear has been reopened, the state Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation said on Monday.

Three miles of the trail, between Icicle Creek and Twin Falls Creek, were closed earlier this month after a brown bear charged a biker and others reported a moose carcass in the area. Park staff visited the area on Sunday and found that the bear had abandoned the carcass, Park Superintendent Tom Harrison said in an email Monday. The area in question is on the northern stretch of the trail, about 5.5 miles in from the Eagle River end of the trail.

Harrison reminded people using the park to be prepared for bear encounters, recognize bear behavior and to take proper precautions.
