Wasilla man dies at Matanuska Lake

A 23-year-old Wasilla man died while swimming in Matanuska Lake over the weekend, Alaska State Troopers reported.

James Evangelestomp had been swimming in the lake Saturday evening "when he submerged under water for an unknown reason and did not resurface," troopers said in a report posted online.

Troopers responded to the lake, southwest of Palmer, just after 6 p.m. after receiving a report of CPR being applied to a person there, troopers said.

Matanuska-Susitna Borough medics took Evangelestomp to Mat-Su Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, troopers said.

No foul play is suspected, troopers said.
