The battle for Anchorage baseball supremacy has begun, and Brandon Henry's shutout on Tuesday gave the Anchorage Bucs the edge against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in the annual three-game showdown known as the Mayor's Cup.

The Bucs, who are trying to prevent the Pilots from winning their eighth straight Mayor's Cup, bettered the Pilots 4-0 in Game 1 at Mulcahy Stadium, where the two teams will meet again Wednesday and Thursday.

The Bucs own a 6-5 edge on the season series with the Pilots.

Henry struck out six and walked three in nine innings, with run support coming primarily in the form of Andy Crowley, who drove in two runs and scored.

Crowley drove in the Bucs' first run on a second-inning double and later scored from third on an error to forge a 2-0 lead. The Bucs scored another in the third inning and led 3-0 in the seventh when Crowley drove in his second run with a single.

Pilots starter Carlos Fuentes struck out seven in six innings, but allowed three runs in the loss.

Miners 7, Chinooks 4

Michael Thomas drove in three runs on three hits Tuesday to help the Mat-Su Miners cruise by the Chugiak Chinooks 7-4 at Loretta French Field in Chugiak.

The win moved the Miners into a tie for first place with the Fairbanks Goldpanners.

Thomas knocked in the Miners' first run in the second inning, bringing in Brendan Farney with a single. In the fourth inning, Thomas plated John Williams with a single to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. The Miners extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning and 7-0 in the top of the seventh.

Miners starter Cody Ponce left in the bottom of the seventh after allowing two runs. Ponce finished with two strikeouts for his third win.

Daniel Salter scored twice and notched an RBI for the Chinooks.

Oilers 3, Goldpanners 2, 11 innings

Michael Hoo scored from second on a single from Mike Wieland in the bottom of the 11th inning Tuesday to thwart a comeback effort from the first-place Fairbanks Goldpanners and prevail 3-2 at Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The Oilers led 1-0 after a first-inning RBI-single by A.J. Ramirez, but pitching ruled the diamond until the top of the ninth, when the Goldpanners rallied for a 2-1 lead on a 2-run single from David Fletcher.

The Oilers clawed back for a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth when Dillon Dobson tripled and later scored an unearned run from third base on a Goldpanners throwing error.

Oilers starter G.J. Strauss struck out six in eight scoreless innings of work, but reliever Dylan Silva earned his second win after striking out two in a scoreless 11th.
