The Anchorage Glacier Pilots evened the Mayor's Cup three-game series with the Anchorage Bucs on Wednesday, edging the Bucs 2-1 at Mulcahy Stadium.
The Pilots now have a chance to win their eighth straight Mayor's Cup in Thursday's finale, thanks in part to a stellar pitching performance from Sean Buckle and the powerful bat of Brendan McCurry. Buckle pitched six scoreless innings, allowing one hit, and McCurry ripped a solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Pilots a 2-0 lead.
Jensen Park scored the Pilots first run in the first inning when he raced home from third base on a passed ball. Don Andre Clark scored the Bucs only run on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning.
The Bucs won the first game of the Mayor's Cup 4-0 on Tuesday.
Goldpanners split with Oilers
A two-run third inning was enough to give the Fairbanks Goldpanners a 2-1 win over the Peninsula Oilers in the first game of doubleheader at Seymour Memorial Park on Wednesday.
The Oilers bounced back to take the second game of the doubleheader when Dillon Dobson scored on a Mike Wieland single in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
Both Goldpanners runs were unearned in the first game, with David Fletcher and Casey Munoz each scoring on separate errors by the Oilers.
Goldpanners starter Nathan Bannister held the Oilers scoreless until the sixth inning, when Taylor Tempel scored on a groundout by Jake Alvarez.
Miners 8, Chinooks 1
A.J. Simcox racked five RBIs Wednesday to propel the Mat-Su Miners to an 8-1 win over the host Chugiak Chinooks at Loretta French Field in Chugiak and move the Miners into first place in the standings.
Simcox blasted a three-run homer in the top of the second inning to highlight a five-run frame for the Miners. Starter Trevor Bettencourt earned his third win with five strikeouts in six innings.
