A passenger on a flight from Kodiak to Anchorage packed a loaded gun in a carry-on bag seized at a checkpoint early Wednesday, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Transportation Security Administration employees at Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport noticed the .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun during an X-ray of the bag about 7:55 a.m., troopers said in a written statement. The gun's owner, a 26-year-old Kodiak man not named in the statement, was passing through the TSA checkpoint on his way to an Alaska Airlines flight, troopers said.

The gun held 16 rounds, with no round in its firing chamber, and troopers seized the firearm. The owner was released, and a decision on filing charges of bringing a gun into a restricted area rests with prosecutors, troopers said.

The flight was allowed to continue to Anchorage.
