Burn ban issued for Anchorage as fire danger increases

A burn ban has been issued for Anchorage as forecasters predict unseasonably warm, dry weather patterns for the remainder of the week.

Anchorage Fire officials said the ban goes into effect at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

"It has been a number of years since Alaskans have seen this level of fire danger for this length of time," Anchorage Fire Department's Deputy Operations Chief James Vignola said in a media release.

Unusually persistent warm and dry weather conditions, along with minimal rain, have rendered the vegetation in Southcentral Alaska at very high to extreme fire danger levels, according the release. All permitted burns, use of outdoor fires and portable fireplaces have been banned until further notice.

The only exceptions to the ban are covered gas, electric and charcoal barbecue grills and fish smokers.

Violators face a $75 fine. Report violations by calling 911.
