Volunteer Organizations Seek Specific Goods for 2013 Spring Flood Survivors
Hotline Ready to Receive Identified Disaster Recovery Items
ANCHORAGE - Alaskan volunteer organizations and the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management are working together with community volunteers to provide supplies and tools to the 2013 Spring Flood survivors. People living in Anchorage or Fairbanks that would like to assist the survivors can call 1-855-374-4790 to donate items.
The public is reminded to confirm a need before donating to a volunteer organization supporting 2013 Spring Flood survivors. During a major disaster receiving items that are not needed becomes a burden to the community. Unneeded items will not be transported but will be donated to an established Alaskan charity. The most requested items by the 2013 spring flood survivors include:
· Tools for construction
· Tools for home rebuilding
· Building Materials
· Non-Perishable Food
· Kitchen Goods (pots, pans, dinnerware)
· Cleaning Supplies
· Disposable Paper Products
Individuals willing to donate items are asked to call the donation hotline 1-855-374-4790 and a donations manager will schedule a time to pick-up or drop-off identified items. Items will be packaged and transported to impacted communities.
CASH – Financial gifts are the best way to immediately help survivors. Donate to an established relief organization. A list of charitable organizations that have been active during the 2013 Spring Flood response and recovery are available at Ready.Alaska.Gov.
CONFIRM – A community hit by a disaster does not have the time, staffing or money to dispose of unneeded donations. Volunteers should confirm their need before traveling to impacted areas. Alaska has many voluntary, faith and community-based organizations active in disasters.
CONNECT – People are encouraged to connect with a local relief agency for volunteer opportunities and to identify needs of survivors. Volunteer groups willing to travel to Alaska to assist should visitReady.Alaska.Gov for a list of organizations to contact for opportunities.
