Child injured in Togiak hit and run, driver arrested

An 8-year-old boy was struck by a pickup and then run over Wednesday evening in a Togiak hit and run, Alaska State Troopers say.

After an investigation, Damien Lockuk, 19, was arrested on charges of reckless driving, felony assault and leaving the scene of an injury accident, according to an online dispatch.

Officials say Lockuk was driving a 1993 Toyota pickup through the middle of a village around 8:45 p.m. when the child stepped into the road. Lockuk's truck just had one functional brake so he was unable to stop before hitting the child. Troopers did notice a 75-foot skid mark from a single tire on the gravel road.

The pickup drove over the boy before Luckuk fled the scene, according to the online post. He was later arrested and taken to the Dillingham Correctional facility.

The child was evacuated to Dillingham and is in stable condition.

Police do not believe alcohol was involved in the collision.
